First lease on a new Wyndham Vale home: the standards that catch owners out
A house fresh from handover can still fail the rental minimum standards. Here is what to check first.
In short: New homes fail on what was never finished: coverings, fans and anchors.
Window coverings
Bedrooms and living areas need window coverings that close for privacy and block light. Many new homes are handed over without them.
Blind cord anchors
Since 1 December 2025, cords and chains on blinds must be anchored so no loop hangs where a child can reach it.
Ventilation
Bathrooms need an exhaust fan or opening window. A fan that vents only into the roof space, or one not yet installed, is worth fixing before a first lease.
Heating
A fixed heater in good working order in the main living area. We confirm one is installed.
Locks and latches
Entry doors need key operated locks and external windows need working latches.
